Improving the Paediatric Intensive Care Experience

Updated: September 30th, 2025

Hello Bubble Foundation!

Thank you for giving me the chance to talk about my important research project!

We know that some children become unwell around the time of their bone marrow transplantation and unfortunately a few have to be admitted to Paediatric Intensive Care (PIC). My name is Dr Liz Day and I am a paediatric intensive care consultant starting a research project to try to find out why some children become so ill after their transplant and what we can do to change this. A big part of this project is speaking to families, children and healthcare teams about what it is like to be admitted to PIC and how we can make things better during this extremely challenging journey.

With research, it is really important to involve families from the very beginning and I would love to hear from anyone who would like to tell me about their experiences (whether they involve PIC or not!). This will help make my research project better and make sure I am asking the right questions in the right way. I am looking for anyone who can spare an hour or two to talk in a group, either in person or online. I am particularly keen to talk to those who have experienced a bone marrow transplant (whether as a patient or family member) and this includes kids & young people as their voices are so important. My next event is scheduled for Saturday 22nd November.

Please have a look at my webpage which explains more about the project and how you can get involved.
