The Bubble Foundation UK is a registered charity based at the Great North Children's Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne that supports children born with rare, life-threatening immune deficiencies. It funds pioneering medical research, specialist equipment, and educational aids, while also providing toys and emotional support for families dealing with long-term isolation in "bubble" units.
I have decided to run a mile a day in June to raise funds for this amazing charity. As many of you are aware, Bailey was diagnosed with a rare immune deficiency in 2011 which led to him undergoing a Bone Marrow Transplant.
Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) is a rare, inherited X-linked recessive disorder, primarily affecting boys, characterized by a triad of immunodeficiency, eczema, and microthrombocytopenia (small, low-count platelets). It arises from mutations in the WAS gene, causing significant bleeding risks, recurrent infections, and increased susceptibility to autoimmune diseases and lymphomas.
We have recently found out that Declan, my great nephew, has the same condition as Bailey. He will undergo a Bone Marrow Transplant later this year. As a family we know how amazing all the staff on Ward 3 are. They supported Bailey & myself throughout his transplant 15 years ago. We know that Declan is in safe hands and that they will be a massive support to him, Maddie and our family before, during and after his transplant.
I thought this would be a great time to raise some much needed funds for a charity that does amazing things for families like ours.
Any donation, big or small will make a massive difference to this fantastic charity.
Thank you so much for your support. 🩵
