The Smokin’ Spitfires are a Newcastle-based, horn-driven soul and R&B band known for their energetic live shows and deep roots in classic rhythm & blues. Built around the songwriting and vocals of Neil Hunter, they blend original material with the spirit of artists like Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave and James Brown, delivering a big, punchy sound powered by a full brass section and seasoned musicians.

They’re a well-loved fixture on the North East live music circuit, regularly playing venues such as The Cluny and The Globe, and they’re also notable for their long-running charity work with The Bubble Foundation. More than just a gigging band, The Smokin’ Spitfires are a respected part of Newcastle’s soul scene, combining musical pedigree, community spirit and consistently crowd-pleasing performances.

The Smokin' Spitfires are an eight+ piece soul and rhythm and blues (R&B) band based in the North East of England. They specialise in performing original music composed by their lead singer, Neil Hunter. Both Neil Hunter and trombone player Terry O'Hern were pivotal members of the East Side Torpedoes, a renowned band from the same region. The Smokin' Spitfires have continued this legacy, delivering dynamic performances that blend original compositions with classic soul covers.

The band has a longstanding tradition of supporting the Bubble Foundation. They host monthly Sunday afternoon gigs at The Cluny in Newcastle, in aid of the Bubble Foundation. Between 2013 - 2024 they raised an astounding £24,100!

Over the years, the Smokin' Spitfires have been recognised for their exceptional musicianship. Their collective experience and passion for soul and R&B have solidified their reputation as one of the most popular bands to emerge from the North East since The Animals, and we couldn't be happier to have them as regular fundraisers, supporting the patients and medical research on Ward 3.
