Kristina

Written by Jekaterina:

Kristina from Ireland ( 14 years old now) was diagnosed with SCID when she was only 6 months old and was admitted to Ward 3 in August, 2012. She had her first BMT in September. Everything was going well until she’s got GVHD and became very poorly. No treatment was helping and it felt like we were running in circles with no “light at the end of the tunnel” until a second transplant was mentioned. This time it was a new type of transplant - and it was a trial, but it gave us hope.

October, 2013 Kristina had her second transplant. She had few complications after: retaining fluids and fluids going into her lungs, she was in ICU for few weeks not able to breathe by herself.

It was very hard time, probably the hardest of all , but luckily for us - Kristina is a fighter. And she fought her way through all the complications.

Finally in September, 2014 she was able to go back home to Ireland. We’ve spent more than 2 years in Newcastle between being admitted and staying in halfway houses, we have mostly the good memories.

Kristina started secondary school this year. Her main challenge in life is her short stature - she’s only 110 cm tall and won’t grow much more.

But she still remains that strong, positive and happy girl.

Thanks to an amazing care of Bubble foundation, hospital staff and support of fellow families in the unit.
