What we need: Toys and educational equipment
The Bone Marrow Transplant Unit treats children from birth to 17 years old. These babies and children can spend from 3 months to 2 years in their sterile BUBBLE.
It is imperative that we try to eliminate periods of boredom and depression, which can often occur when a child is isolated long term. Importantly, evidence indicates that the more positive the attitude, the better the recovery.
To achieve this within the constraints of space and illness, a team of professionals involving medical and play specialists, occupational and physiotherapists and teachers plan a programme to maximise child development during the time spent on the unit. This requires a range of toys and educational equipment to meet the needs of the individual child.
A strict hygiene protocol is observed by the few medical staff and family members who are allowed to care for the children. Any items with which they come into contact must be cleaned and sterilised to prevent cross infection of bacteria. This includes everything from high chairs and beds to books and board games.
Toys and equipment can rarely be shared so as to reduce the risk of contamination and resulting infection. Washable items are frequently laundered at high temperatures and non-washable items are cleaned several times daily with alcohol wipes, both of which limit the ‘life’ of each item.
