London Reception 7th July 2011
London Reception 7th July 2011
A reception was held at the Mint Hotel, Tower Bridge London. MP’s, Journalists and Celebrities joined Staff and Families to celebrate the work of the Unit.
It was announced that we have four new patrons, Phillip Schofield, Alexander Millar, Dr Chris Steele and Steve Harmison.
RED BALOON by Alexander Millar
In 2011 'Working Man', an exhibition of original paintings by Alexander Millar was exhibited at the Great North Museum: Hancock.
This exhibition cemented Alexander Millar as one of the most significant contemporary artists in the country. The exhibition saw Sue Steward, art critic for the London Evening Standard, compare Alexander Millar to L.S. Lowry.
This original oil on canvas (THE RED BALOON) was painted specifically for the 'Working Man' exhibition and was commissioned by the Bubble Foundation. Alexander Millar is proud to be a patron of this entirely self funded charity which raises money to care and medically treat babies and children suffering from Severe Combined Immune Deficiency Syndrome or SCID, essentially meaning the child does not have an immune system and therefore cannot fight any infection.
The painting features Alexander Millar's trademark 'gadgie' character with a child clutching a red balloon; the symbol of the Bubble Foundation.
The piece comes hand mounted in a bespoke slip and framed. The piece has a letter of provenance and a certificate confirming its inclusion in a museum exhibition. If you would like to own this wonderful piece of original art work and help The Bubble please visit www.ffffff.co.uk where you have the opportunity to place your bid. It will remain on line until 21st July 2011…so hurry.

A Message from Wendy Larmouth Ward Sister
Dear Friends and Supporters
As you may have seen in the local news on the 8th of November last year the unit moved from Ward 23 at the Newcastle General Hospital to our new unit on Ward 3 at the Great North Children’s Hospital at the RVI.
Although we were sad to leave ward 23 we love our new home!!
The new unit offers much improved facilities for everyone.
For the first time we have a purpose built day unit.
Our parents have a large comfortable rest room including kitchen facilities; we have a quiet room which can be used for prayers and an interview room for private discussions with our Doctors.
Our staff have a comfortable rest room for breaks which also includes a kitchen area and we have a lovely seminar room for our education and meeting events.
The Doctors and I have dedicated office each which is great and very welcome
Best of all are the Children’s rooms (we now have 10 which is 2 more) which are lighter brighter and larger and in most rooms have a view over the hospital or the city the nurses tell me they also work well as a working space. The Bubble Foundation have been generous as always and have provided a range of furnishings and finishes to make the unit work so well and with Paula’s ( our Hospital play specialist) help our décor is the envy of all.
Being part of the New Children’s Hospital offers an improved service for the children as we are now able to easily access other medical teams and investigations or treatments can be performed with minimal disturbance to the child when the child needs them without the inevitable delay the distance between hospitals caused.
The new hospital makes the unit ready for the future and ensures that we can continue to offer the best to our patients and their families
Regards and Thanks
Wendy Larmouth
