The Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Newcastle-upon-Tyne General Hospital treats babies and children with immune-deficient conditions, by bone marrow transplantation.

The Unit offers a very effective holistic approach to the family and patient.  The Liaison Team provides as much information as possible to prepare families for the experience they are about to face.  On arrival, close relationships are formed with medical and nursing staff and continue for the duration of the patient stay.

Nursery nurses play an important role to encourage child development within the constraints; a social worker provides practical and emotional support to families for a range of social and financial issues, and the Liaison Team is involved again following discharge, when families need to learn how to cope without the Ward and gain confidence in after-care, including drug administration and ongoing medical contact.
